Are You Afraid of a Tonsillectomy?

As time moves forward many medical procedures change. What was once a harsh and painful procedure may become something less intense as advances in medicine allows. Have you ever talked to someone over forty years old that got their tonsils out as a kid. The procedure that people went through years ago is very different from the procedure of today and the procedure that may move toward the standard practice is even easier on the patient.

A patient in the 1970s who needed a tonsillectomy first probably had to be admitted to a hospital overnight. Their tonsils would be cut out while they were under anesthesia, and they would require stitches to close up the wounds left behind where the tonsils once resided.

Today, the standard procedure is to burn the base of the tonsils and this tool, that kind of looks like a soldering gun would simultaneously cut the tonsil to remove it and burn the wound closed. This isn’t incredibly different from the past methods because the tonsils are still fully removed from the muscle tissue and recovery time is still weeks long. The advancement here was that there is no requirement for subsequent visits and the patient could return home the same day as the tonsillectomy.

For adults there is a new procedure. The procedure is done with the patient being conscious, and therefore it’s not prescribed for children. In this procedure only a local anesthesia is used and the person probably sits in a chair much like being at the dentist. A laser is used to burn away the tissue of the tonsils. In this way, the entire tonsil does not need to be removed and the muscle in the back of the throat are not affected. This allows for resurfacing and removal of only the infected tissue of the tonsils. Advances continue and if you need a tonsillectomy be sure to consult your doctor on the best choice for you.
