Getting Your Insulin the Easy Way

Back in 2006, a company known as Insulet created a beautiful little device known as the Omnipod Insulin Management System. While it may look a lot like a small PDA coupled with a tiny computer mouse, it is actually a great idea in self administered insulin. The process is quite simple, and the effect is very useful to a diabetic on the go. While the idea has not yet gained a lot of traction, it has found a use among some traveling diabetics, on account of its ease of use and its reliability. At this moment, the only thing that could make it any easier to use would be if they were to develop an iPhone app for it- and you never know. They just might.

Basically, the main part of the Omnipod is attached to your abdomen, through the use of an adhesive border. This helps to keep out things such as dirt and any other nastiness that might get in the way of your time away. The pod can be filled with enough insulin to last the average diabetic about three days, which should be enough for most business trips. And while the notion of wearing a small silver mouse on your stomach might be a little strange, you can not beat the convenience of not having to shoot up your insulin.

The wonderful part of the Omnipod is that you can use it without any kind of hypodermic needles or other accessories. You use just its control pad and the part that connects to your body. All you have to do is push a button, and you get insulin. There is no preparation required, because that work has already been done. So if you are having a glucose problem and feeling a little groggy, and you do not have a health care provider nearby, you are still all right. If the situation was truly desperate, the Omnipod could literally save your life.
