Preventing Diabetes

Diabetes effects 8.3% of the population. It’s a serious risk to all Americans, it affects everyone of all ages and ethnical backgrounds.

Here are some tips to reduce your risk:

  • Being overweight is a contributing factor to developing type 2 diabetes. Avoid fatty foods and sugars. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, a high fiber diet can also be very beneficial. Changes in your diet won’t just reduce your risk of diabetes, but several other health problems as well. It will also make you look and feel so much better.
  • Avoid food which is high in nitrate. Things like hot dogs, bacon and other cured meat can cause damage to your pancreas. Your pancreas is responsible for the production of insulin.
  • Knowing your family history is very important. If you family has a predisposition to developing diabetes you can discuss with the doctor what options there are for you. The hormone dehydroepiandrosterone might be helping in preventing the disease.
  • Stay active. It can’t be stressed enough how important exercise is to your overall health. It can also reduce your risks of diabetes by enhancing the sensitivity to insulin and an improved glucose tolerance.
  • Take plenty of vitamins. Vitamins such as Vitamin C, Biotin, Vitamin E, Vitamin B3, B6 and B12 are all beneficial to the reduction of the risk of diabetes.
  • Important minerals such as Chromium, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc and Manganese should be included in your diet.

Diabetes is a serious illness, it happens when your body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar in your blood, the pancreas is responsible for producing insulin. Insulin is what the body needs to turn glucose into energy. Without the insulin, the glucose builds up in the body. This is what causes diabetes.
