Technology has affected more than just how we gather information, or how we learn, but also how we heal. Medical advancement has allowed for the very sick to have healing medicines that 20 years ago, would have been unheard of. For instance, we now have robotic arms that complete heart surgery. The doctor merely guides the arm to do the work using electrodes that are strapped to his own fingers. Advancement in medicine is arthroscopic surgery. This is where a surgeon makes a small incision, places a gas under the skin to puff it up away from the area, and to allow room to work. Then they place an arthroscopic tube in the incision. From the tube come the instruments needs to complete the surgery. This means that for the patient, the healing time decreases from months, to days.
Another innovative technique uses an old household item, but is saving lives everyday. Glue is being used to treat aneurisms, and heart issues. Organ transplants have also taken a very different look with the new technology. With the use of stem cells and chord blood, doctors are able to locate the creative cells that originate specific parts of the body like the kidneys, bladder, and liver. Doctors can make exact replicas of the patients own organs this way, and replace old defective ones, with new ones, that are an exact DNA match to the patient.
There have also been drastic improvements to brain surgery. In years past, a hole was created in the skull, and then replaces with metal and screws. Today, we are able to drill a small hole, and navigate, through arthroscopy, to the place that needs attention, whether for stroke or aneurism.
The latest in medicine would include the cancer therapies, including radiation and chemotherapy. There are advances being made everyday to find a cure altogether.
